museum on the move

Zumu’s Story

Move Museum – Because art moves all
ZUMU is a community based mobile museum, which moves throughout Israel showcasing changing exhibits that are created and curated together with the local communities. At ZUMU (a portmanteau combining the Hebrew words for “move” and “museum”) we believe that art plays a key role in creating a more open and accepting community and builds bridges between all different sections of Israeli society. We set out on this groundbreaking journey in order to overcome geographical distances, to bridge cultural divides, to circumvent physical barriers, to overcome conceptual hurdles and to get rid of the conventional divisions between the artists & audiences, art & communities and creativity & reality.

Art <> Communiy <> Education
ZUMU’s journey is based on a non-hierarchical triple-pronged approach comprising of; (1) Showcasing Israel’s best contemporary art. (2) A close partnership with the hosting communities enabling a creative process including diverse voices and communities. (3) A dialogue-based educational program, turning the museum visitor into an actively participating partner and an integral part of creating the narrative.

Audience and community – creating a shared reality
ZUMU creates a deep connection with the local hosting authorities and communities, in order to embed the museum within their urban fabric. Together, we create an exhibit and public programming that touches and connects uniquely to that place. We arrive at each hosting city about half a year leading up to the opening of the museum in order to research, map and learn the intrinsic characteristics of the city and to lay a firm infrastructure for subsequent partnerships. Both the theme of the exhibit as well as the shape and content of the public programming, are drawn from the hosting city itself. The deep learning process about and with the city, generate unique artworks and creative collaborations.

Israel’s largest arts exhibit – art that wants move
ZUMU aims to redefine the modern-day museum, changing it from an aloof ivory tower, into a dynamic and moving cultural hub that can change and adapt to the specific needs of its hosting communities. ZUMU’s huge changing exhibits are based on three interconnected bedrocks: 1. The best contemporary Israeli art. 2. Artworks by artists participating in a residency program which creates specially commissioned original works in partnership with the local community. 3. Artworks by local artists.

Free Art – Free entry!
First and foremost, ZUMU is a socio-educational project seeking to create a new shared language for all parts of Israeli society. All who enter its gates are invited to tea and cookies, based on the belief that a museum should feel warm and sweet – just like a home. ZUMU tours are guided by dialogue-based principles, and the team of tour guides is always comprised of locals who go through a special training program. Entry to ZUMU (including all its programming and activities) is always free – based on the belief that we do not own the art and do have the right to charge for it.

Creating Magic – Building Benches for dialogue
In every city we visit, we look for a large abandoned building that we can turn into a massive exhibition space and a vibrant, welcoming, temporary art center. The magic that radiates throughout the space is created by artists, curators, producers, artistic directors, media professionals and educators who dream by night (and implement by day) about a portable house of culture, art and society in which everyone is invited to sit together on creative, conversational benches created by Zumu.
